The Mothers' Stories Project: A Mothers' Story

 Susan Schnirring

Year of Surrender:  Twins in October 1968
City and State at the time of surrender:  Sioux City Iowa
Age at the time of surrender:  18

Current residence:  Illinois

I had broken up with my boyfriend and my parents decided I would go to the Florence Crittendon Prison (I refuse to call it a home). I was not told that I was expecting twins until they were born. I was not given any other option, no counseling and no legal advice. Losing my sons has affected all aspects of my life, my health, my parenting of other children, my relationships, everything. Reunited the first time in 1993. Second time in 2007. Much better the second time around. My sons were raised in an alcoholic home. Adoptive father drank himself to death and adoptive mother then dated a pedophile who molested the grandchildren. Writing my story was what I needed to do to heal from this suppressed grief that nearly ruined my life and health. My 81 year old father apologized and says he now knows he made a big mistake. I am finally healing.
